Robert Greene said that you can escape life by tiptoeing to it when you’re young, but when you come to your 30s, life catches up on you and problems start arising. If you are not so valuable, you get replaced by younger, more energetic, more educated and more interesting people.
This is seen everywhere, from normal jobs, to being a celebrity. If you don’t build yourself on a level where you become unreplaceable while you’re young, soon enough life will replace you with someone else.
In a world where competition in almost every field is high, becoming an average person with average goals can leave you with an average to a very dissatisfying life later on as you are competing with the rest of the world.
The only way for you to escape the competition of being average is differentiating yourself by finding your life’s purpose and sticking to it. Not a lot of people have a purpose, and therefore the competition now will be lower and that will make you unreplaceable.
Somehow, if you stick to your purpose, people and things fall into place for you and this clears the path to put yourself further.
That happens only when you stick to your purpose
Tip toeing through life by having average jobs, average friends and average goals will not differentiate you and will not put you ahead of competition. The thing that many people miss today is a deep connection with life, and that can only be done if you have a clear purpose.
“Don't ever attach yourself to a person, place, company, organization or a project. Attach yourself to a mission, a calling & a purpose only. That is how you keep your power and peace. It worked pretty well for me so far.” — Elon Musk
Competition is everywhere and people get replaced all the time by younger and more educated people. Automation also replaces a lot of them and that puts a lot of average people in danger.
This is why generalization today beats specialization as specialized people don’t have any other knowledge or skill to bounce back in case of being replaced. Also generalization is what attracts innovation, and innovators are not so easily replaced.
Specialists are people who always repeat the same mistakes. The more the world is specialized, the more it will be run by generalists.
Avoiding the crowded place of average can only be achieved if you attached yourself with a purpose. Not a lot of people have a purpose as most of them only chase money and people.
How can you achieve a deep connection with life?
As I said earlier, the thing that a lot of people miss today is deep connection with life. You might felt that deep connection when you were engaged in something that you liked, and hours passed by without you even noticing it.
That state is called “The Zone” or being in “flow”. This state can only be achieved when you are engaged in something that you like, maybe a sport, or something artistic like writing, painting, or anything that draws your attention and interest. That’s the deep connection with life that I’m talking about.
“The happiest people spend much time in a state of flow — the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.” — Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
How can that make you unreplaceable? First of all it forces you into the present moment. It requires a lot of practice to put your mind in the present moment for so long at will, and average people can only experience that when they are is a state of flow.
By practice you can achieve that state of flow in everything that you do, and that’s how you become unreplaceable and powerful. If you can put yourself in a state of flow during your work, your studies, your side business, or anything that you don’t find so pleasant, your life will start improving drastically.
And this is where the advice “follow your passion” can be dangerous. A person has a passion for something because it’s the only thing that can put him in a state of flow.
That’s the reason of having a passion about something, being in the present moment. But if you train your mind to be in the present moment and achieve a state of flow in everything that you do, life will be your passion.
Now how do you train your mind to achieve a state of flow at will? First of all you have to get rid of all these small distractions around you when you are working (YOUR PHONE!!!).
Our phones have become our best friend and worst enemy. People today cannot focus on something for too long because they have unconsciously trained their brains to look up for their phone and social media every 10 minutes.
Detoxifying your brain from constantly trying to escape boredom by checking your phone will upgrade and reset it. This requires some mental effort until your resistance to checking your phone strengthens.
After that you can find yourself more easily achieving a flow state. Keeping your phone on a flight mode and away from you while working will help a lot.
Stop using your phone trying to escape boredom. Boredom is when ideas are being born. When you constantly spend your mental energy on your phone, you’ll be left depleted and without the energy needed to go deep in a task. That’s how you connect deeply with life.
Boredom always precedes a period of great creativity
Bottom line is, find a purpose and stick to it. That’s the only way that you can make yourself valuable to the world and unreplaceable.
In a world of competition, avoiding it will take you on a whole new level, and that’s done only if you attach yourself with a purpose.
